At CEWHIN, we have had the privilege of working with remarkable individuals who are driving change in their communities. One such powerhouse is Funmilayo Abdullahi, a disability rights advocate, media personality, and dedicated community mobilizer. Since 2023, she has been a key partner in our work, particularly in strengthening access to psychosocial support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

A Strong Voice for Persons with Disabilities

When we first partnered with Funmilayo on our project in Osun State, she was leading the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Osogbo. Her leadership, advocacy skills, and deep commitment to disability rights made her an essential ally in our efforts to improve support services for survivors of GBV, particularly those with disabilities.

Despite living with a physical disability herself, Funmilayo has refused to let barriers define her impact. Instead, she has leveraged her extensive networks, media presence, and grassroots organizing skills to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in accessing justice and support services after experiencing violence.

Driving Change with Media

Beyond her advocacy and community work, Funmilayo is also a media personality who uses her platform to amplify the voices of PWDs. She hosts Ohun Oju Ri, a radio programme aired every Thursday on Fresh FM Osogbo, where she discusses pressing social issues, particularly those affecting persons with disabilities. Through this show, she has created a space for dialogue, awareness, and empowerment, ensuring that disability rights remain a key part of public discourse.

Training, Advocacy, and Community Mobilization

Funmilayo’s passion for advocacy goes beyond speaking out—she takes action. Through our collaboration, she has trained as a Trainer, equipping herself with the tools to educate others on disability rights, inclusion, and GBV prevention. Her ability to connect with different stakeholders, from government agencies to local communities, has made her an invaluable force in pushing for systemic change.

One of her greatest strengths is mobilization. Whether it’s rallying support for a campaign, organizing community dialogues, or bringing together service providers to improve GBV response mechanisms, Funmilayo ensures that no one is left behind. She has successfully bridged gaps between PWDs and critical support systems, making resources more accessible and inclusive.

A Super Mobilizer for Change

Through her media platform, advocacy work, and grassroots engagement, Funmilayo continues to challenge harmful norms and push for a society where PWDs are seen, heard, and protected. Her resilience, commitment, and leadership serve as an inspiration—not just to CEWHIN but to everyone fighting for a more inclusive and just world.

We are proud to have Funmilayo as a partner in our work, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration as we continue to champion disability rights and access to justice for survivors of GBV.

Funmilayo Abdullahi is more than an advocate—she is a movement. And with voices like hers leading the charge, we are one step closer to a society where everyone, regardless of ability, can live free from violence and discrimination.
